Barn Owl

Postby mantrid » Thu Jun 23, 2011 2:43 am

This piece I started in water clay but because of the long gaps between sessions it had dried out. The wings were very brittle and cracked. I am a bit lazy with armatures and hate wasting time with them. So I try and make do without as I tend to sculpt small pieces anyway. However these wings were just too thin.

I coated the piece in latex to make a quick basic mould for a one off cast in wax

I am now using this wax as my master. Although I like the consistency of water clay it has many disadvantages for small pieces. The thing I like about wax is for the size I usully work at it requires no armatures and doesnt dry out.

The piece is unfinished there is most of the finer detail yet to do and also the feet and face. I also think the wings are a bit short, from looking at other pictures of the animal.

So far, the only images I have been able to actually get up on this message board are direct links. The IMG tag does not seem to work.

Wings are great, not to short at all. Maybe some work with face and it will be done :)
