Looking for new method

Postby alicia » Sun Jul 10, 2011 7:10 am

I first learned to make rubber molds in Italy and now I'm moving to the USA. We used a putty-like silicon rubber that is pressed onto the master piece by piece. Then the mother mold is constructed after the rubber has set up, I'm told this product is not as common in the USA and is much more expensive. I'm looking for recommendations on what to use in the USA- for casting figures and portraits in the round.

I use the am 128 from aeromarine. It's the cheapest source of silicone I have been able to find. The method I use is to lay the sculpture on it's side, make a clay parting ledge and pour the resin over it. I use 1/4 " dowels because when the mold and back up molds are finished they register everything together perfectly with 1/4 x 20 bolts

Thanks! Do you use a thickening agent as well?

First two coats no thickener...vacuum degas the mix.
Then I increase the thickener for another 2-3 more coats. This gives you a smooth surface about 1/4" thick. Aeromarine sell the thickener also.
